What does self care look life in the Autumnal Shift?

Jessica BrownComment

Seasons change, and we do too.

This Autumnal shifts ask us to, once again, be malleable and tend to ourselves and our lives in different ways than the previous season. We were just enjoying peak Summer, hot hot heat, peak everything all at once. I called upon cooling foods like cucumbers and mint to keep me hydrated and balanced. I craved salads, enjoyed bbq-ing and eating late. Now we shift into colder temps, more hours of darkness, wind, rain, indoor heating. Our feet want to be covered in cozy socks, I’m bringing out my wool sweaters again, and sipping warm herbal tea from the moment I get up. We’re spending more time indoors, tending to our more internal worlds. It’s getting darker sooner, we’re sleeping more which turns to dreaming more. I feel myself looking at my home in different ways, wanting to create a cozy warm ambiance with lighting and refresh the space with new paint colors. I find it easier to say no to plans…I’d rather stay in and go to bed early.

My favorite practice right now is turning my phone off at 7pm, and not turning it on until an hour or more after I wake. I find it sets the tone for such better/deeper sleep and a slow start to the morning…I find my mind so much more mellow and clear, dreaming up creative endeavors and ideas I want to nourish. Tuning into my world, instead of all of the other worlds that exist online (which don’t get me wrong are so fun and inspiring!), but this boundary is really really helpful to hear my desires and dreams.

What practices do you feel called to dive into? My craft basket is finding its way to me more often. Embroidery really is my favorite…

I can feel my skin begging body oil seshes before a hot bath with the beloved Earthbody Oil. Taking the time to cover your skin in herbal body oils aids in detoxification, a happy lymphatic and nervous system, and so much more!

Another way I enjoy this shift is a morning walk after breakfast or evening walk before dinner (and before it gets dark!) Getting to see the subtle ways the road I live in changes, getting my heart rate up, enjoying apples off of the neighbors trees.

Reflecting on this past Summer of all the days spent river side, eating fruit and giggling with friends. Playdates galore. Nap time straight into adventure time, always snacks in the bag ready to go (you know you can’t leave home without snacks with a toddler in tow). And I am feeling SO beyond grateful to get to live where I live, with the community I have.
